The Raid – Movie Review

Kick. Punch. Stab. Awesome. Credits.

Well, that’s my review.

Oh, and along with this picture.

Just look how badass this is.

Okay not really.

The Raid is an Indonesian action film that lives up to all of the hype that has been building for it. It’s fast paced, and at times, insanely tense. It’s a  huge crowd pleaser, and I’m proud to say that I went to go see this twice already.

It starts off with Rama going off to this gang run building to raid it, leaving behind his pregnant wife. You get undertones that something isn’t right, with an old man, and cryptic dialogue. You figure it all out in the end, but nothing really pieces together, like they’re hiding something from us. It will probably be fleshed out in the sequel, but for now as a stand alone movie, not much is explained. Between each action sequence is a short story sequence. That’s how it goes. Story, action, story, action, end.

Not that that matters, since the main focus is the action. And oh. The. Action. It is so fast paced and interesting, that I was honestly scared to blink. It’s probably the best action I’ve seen, um. Ever. No fast cut aways, not hiding the hits. Long cuts of fights, very unique and interesting camera angles. All of this just makes it seem that much more realistic and gritty. I’ve seen many action movies. Live Free or Die Hard, Bad Boys II, and Fast Five are some of my favorite action movies, but they just feature a lot of explosions. I’ve seen foreign kung fu movies like Ip Man, Ong Bak, and the Protector. The reason this one tops all of those is because of it’s simplistic view of things. Nothing grandiose, just small scale, intense, and brutal fights that make you cringe.

You have to experience it for yourself, so please see this small action movie that surpassed enormous expectations. I hope the big(ger) budget sequel doesn’t stray away from what made this great.

I can see some similarities to the structure of video games.

Fun Factor: 10/10 ( I wish I could say 11 )

Good Factor: 6/10

Final Score: 8/10
